"The Devil's Backbone"- Pre-credits and credits sequence
Old fashion bomb implies that where it it set there might me war. Showing violence as a genre as someone was injured and i think he died. Also showing us that the supernatural is involved. On the credits itself, we could see a boy that was tied up in water seems like he drowned and it implied as the music was playing that there was a lot of mystery as the music sounded like something mysterious was going to happen in the film. Sets the tone and shows us that the film was going to be about violence, murder, war and the supernatural. And in the same scene the camera comes out the water and we can see a little boy maybe crying for the boy that was in the water. Also we could see a backbone in the water, so not relates to the tile of the whole movie. But it makes it seem like a more of a mystery as the whole of the credits scene was blurry that suggests that its a mystery and we couldn't see anything.

Carlos, young child, unaware of his surroundings, looks very innocent and middle class kid. He is a very curious child as when he reaches the orphanage and his curiosity had got the more of him. He is a positive and a generally a very good boy. They said "they brought another boy" and they were talking about him. His walking towards darkness he went somewhere where there was a ghost or supernatural. The women felt sorry for him because his dad died in the civil war. They had to bring him to the orphanage as his tutor couldn't keep him anymore because his dad had died. There was another boy there and as Carlos came from a middle class family he had a lot of the things the other children didn't and so the other boy that was older and taller then him tried taking his comics and then when he took it he pushed Carlos and he wanted to have a fight with him, at first Carlos was kind of scared but he sae that he couldn't let his pride down and so then he fights back and tries to show him that he is not a victim but then the fight was stopped
Carmen

We see from the start and earlier on that she is in charge as she said "i cant accept another boy". This shows that she has already accepted a lot of other children and she cannot cop with it. She is wearing black showing usually that a person is either sad or someone has passed away like her husband and also she mentions that he has passed away. Then when the tutor came, she took out a old rigid piece of cloth and then when she rolled it out there was around 6 bars of gold and she rolled it out like it had no value towards her but more like it was a burden to her like her husband that passed away and all the kids in the school and the whole school itself is a burden towards her. She also has another problem that is like a burden towards her and that is that she has a fake leg and suggests she's been involved in some kind of fight and she has to fight against it like all of her other burdens she has to keep on fighting against it to survive or for other people to survive . This shows that she is a kind and caring person. Also she is a fighter but she is a quieter level. She is experienced with children. She walks with a limp, showing that even with ever step she is always fighting against the pain. There is a lot of keys that she has which shows that she has authority. As the has previously shown she is also really kind to the children and even when the children cause trouble or get in trouble, she gives them a gentle warning. She observes a lot but she doesnt speak as much so we don't know if she knows most of the things or not. Carmen is runs the school but then has a relationship with Conchitas boyfriend jistinto. She was having sex with him, but doesnt want anyone to know. She needs the sexual activity with him so she can feel the passion. But on the other hand he has sex so he can powerful as she is the top of the school and so him having sex with him would make him feel powerful. Also so he can take some of the keys to get the gold from the safe. She is teaching the kids in her own place shows that she cares for them. She teaches them something important that you have to together as the reds are working together in the spanish civil war that was happening at the time. But the communists are selfish and doesnt care about other people, just like jisinto as he is selfish and wants to get everything for himself not caring about the effect it will have on other people.
And this shows the contrast as the kids and the teachers are working together as a team and are not like jisinto.

Conchita
When she first walked into the scene where she had to give the men food she was hesitating. She shows a stereotype as a women, that she was clean. Then after when she is in a scene with her boyfriend Jisinto she strokes him and shows love towards her but then he showed he didnt care as he turned away and shows he has more power in the relationship. She is innocent and she implies that she is sad inside and it seems as if she is trapped in the relationship but is trying her best to keep the relationship strong. She is also pushed to the back-round alot and blurred when the men are talking. She doesn't understand what her boyfriend is doing and is completely unaware of what he is trying to achieve. His not loving towards her as when she tries to comfort him he turns his shoulder and walks away, She's subservient to jacinto, she brings him whine and serving him like she is his servant. Jacinto is holding her head like its his property like immortal joe and his many wives.
She brings the kids grains and feeds it to them and also shows a stereotypical lady would be caring and loving towards others. When they are doing an activity together (Jacinto and Conchita) Jacinto is trying to fix a radio box and is being very violent when doing it whereas Conchita does it delicately and and is gentle with everything she does. Then afterwards when the radio is fixed music plays she goes to him to come and go dance but he just walks away like she is irrelevant to him
