Describe the technical and creative skills
In our film we used lighting to get the affects we wanted. In one scene we wanted to use shadows to give a film a bit more of a film noir effect We didn't want the lights to be to strong so we used low-key lighting. We positioned the lights specifically from both sides so we could get shadows. We also used natural lighting to get the affect we wanted. We also used the greenroom for effects. We filmed a specific scene where we needed a background of an office. The green room enabled us to get the background we wanted. We took care of the background we wanted as we knew this was a major part in our grades for the film opening. It added a bit more professionalism swell.
We used costume to create the film noir effects we wanted. Most specifically we used things like;long coats, hats. For the femme fatale we used a long black dress and a long black coat. We used this to portray a typical femme fatale. Sexy, mysterious but can also be manipulating and conniving. We also used props to create film noir effects. We used things like cigarets, alcohol bottles and ash trays to create a film noir atmosphere. This was also used to portray a doomed hero and what a doomed hero does most. They drink smoke and womanise a lot. We added these things to make it look a bit more genuine and real.We used setting to create film noir effects to. We filmed in places like the green room outside SG and also the main building because it has that old look about it which we thought could help us make more of a film noir effect.
We used editing to create a film noir effect. During our editing we used certain things to create a film noir effect like making the ole movie black and white. This helped us create a film noir effect as the majority of film noir movies were set in 1950 were all the movies were black and white. They weren't as developed as they are in the modern 2016 movies we have today.Another thing we added when we edited to create a film noir effect was we cut certain scenes were it was just one camera angle for a very long time. We used short snappy scenes were the camera angle changed every 10 seconds so we had a different perspective. The type of angles we used were tilt ups, extreme close ups and close ups.We used sound to get film noir effects aswell. we used background chatter in bars to make it look a bit more realistic. We also added different sound effects lie a gun shooting or a body dropping. These small things helped us convey more of a noir effect in our film.
I have mastered a variety of skills during my time making my film noir opening. At first i didn't even know how i was going to approach this as i thought that media the subject was modern and 21st century based. With film noir i learned that there are different movies and people watch different american movies because they like them. This opening showed me why people liked film noir and showed me how to portray film noir characters effectively if i wanted to do so in the future.
Describe the Codes and Conventions of a film opening
We used our title because we thought it best suited the film we were about to make. The film was about someone being drunk and being infuenced by the alcahol and being tempted to do things you wouldnt do when sober. This is where we got the title drunk in temptation from. With the font we looked at 4 previous film noir openings from the lampton media youtube site and there was a recurring theme with the fnts. There was one font that being used many a times so we decided to go ahead and use it. With the colours we did the same thing and red was the most used as it shows that the movie maybe has a deceptive side to it so it prompts you to watch it.We decided to put the title big and bold in red wrting in the beggining to that your eyes are instantly on something. With the credits we made them smaller and on the sides so that we dont ruin the main image.
We made a film noir atmosphere by having some of the key conventions in film noir such as the dress code of the males and females. Federal hats and plain dark suits for the men and the women wore posh clothing with gloves and high heels all in black for the film noir effect. We also added cigarettes and spirits to show that it was a real noir themed film. The main convention was the black and white film which we did because it was the one thing to finish the touch of a film noir as colour was expensive back in the 1940s so all the films had to be black and white as the war drained their funding.
We introduced our charectars based on how much they starred in our opening. As in the beggning we didnt know how to start our film after the ident so i deceided to incorporate our main charectars. We showed prem walking down a alleyway. We made this interesting by adding a variety of camera shots.I was cameraman that day so i decided to do a close up a low angle shot a tilt up and a point of view shot. This helped us show how important prem was to the story as most of the camera angles showed that he is more dominant than anyone else. With the other charectars like myself khadija and Abdi we incorporated them when they came with there scenes. We also showed our names in the corners when we feautured to clarify to the audience who we actually were. I feel it was a god way in slowly building up the charectars. From most important to least. I was at the end so i wasnt very important whereas prem was at the begining so he is very important.
We created interest for the audience by adding loads of things. One of those things were blackouts. We did this sort of thing because we thought it would add more suspense. We also added alot of voiceovers to give the audience an insight into what the character was feeling at the time.We thought that if the audience knew what the charectar was feeling and thinking that it would engage them and rail them in. We also created more interest by ending our film noir opening on a cliffhanger. Prem(our main charectar) was in prison. We wanted the audience to know he was caught for what he done and we want them to find out what is going to happen to him in prison after.Hopefully this would lead them on to watch the rest of the movie.
Describe the language, organisations and audiences for your film.
I used Warner Brothers as the producers of my film because they were a very famous film company commonly used in Film Noires in the 1940's and I felt that this suited my genre best. Our ident is an old fashioned Warner Brother's ident in black and white. We had to find the audio seperately for it and then layer it to the video because the audio with the original video was faulty. The new audio looked better and fit the genremore a it had jazz tones to it. My primary target audience are people aged 16-40, fans of 1940's films and old fashioned Film Noirs.Another reason we used Warner brothers as our ident was because i used the research we did before we started our films as guidance. ,out of the previous film noir openings we watched had warner brothers as there ident. This prompted us to use warner brothers. We used a different ident. One that wasn't used before.
Conclusion
In the spectrum of my cinematgraphy and editing i think the final outcome was successful. There is a broad selection of angles within my film opening. The editing made sure that the film opening had a good flow and a excellent level of continuity. However, one aspect that could of prospered is the lighting. The lighting was not thought out well enough which lead to a difficulty when editing the green screen. Overall, i believe my film opening was successful.
